Regenerative medicine seeks functionally viable cells to be delivered at the site of injury besides the need of restoring tissue/organ shape through artificial scaffolds. Cells cultured by conventional methods that allow only two-dimensional growth are not the true representatives of cells growing in vivo. Cells are dynamically related to their surrounding environment that incorporates both cellular and extra-cellular milieu. The density of extra-cellular matrix (ECM) varies from tissue to tissue depending upon the tissue specific proteins and glyocoproteins that orchestrate it. Comprehension of Cell-ECM dynamics is an important aspect for recreating functional tissue ex vivo1. However, one of the fundamental needs to develop this understanding is to allow cells to grow in three-dimensional scaffold. An optimally designed scaffold matrix can have enumerable research and therapeutic applications2.
